Hiking in the Outdoors: Gear Guide

Whether you are a hiking novice, or well experienced in the outdoors, we at Unbound Supply have discussed our top hiking clothing essentials for keeping you safe and comfortable. Hiking is one of the most popular outdoor activities, even more so recently because of COVID, so we thought we would put together a list of the key bits of kit we think you need heading into the winter months.

First things first…. You’ll need a decent base layer.

There’s a few factors you may need to consider in order to be able to appropriately manage your temperature. For the Winter hikers amongst you we think opting for a merino base layer is best. Merino keeps you warm when it's cold and breathes well when it's warm, keeping you comfortable whatever the weather. It's also quick drying, naturally odour resistant and sustainable, making it an excellent choice for a base layer.

We recommend Isobaa’s Merino 180 Long Sleeve Crew (Black) at £75. This base layer is a staple for your hiking wardrobe.

Next up, you'll need to consider your mid layer.

This layer will act as the warmth layer when you stop to refuel or even when you begin to slow down the pace. An excellent choice here would be a down jacket or a fleece as they are able to retain heat whilst remaining lightweight enough to still act as a layer. One big recommendation for mid layers is to not use anything made from cotton, as this fabric likes to hold water and will therefore make you cooler.

Unbound Supply’s team recommend the Vandring Stretch Fleece Hoodie for only £85. This is a bestseller at Fjern and we can see why!

Next up is your shell jacket!

Most hikers hope they will not need to reach for this, however it is absolutely essential to pack as conditions can always change quickly. The two main options here are a softshell jacket or a waterproof. Different shell jackets tend to suit different environments and this is where product descriptions can really come in handy. Check out our waterproof and softshell buying guides to learn more and be mindful of the weather conditions of where you are visiting.

For the cooler climates, such as high output alpine adventures we recommend Fjern’s Grenser Softshell Jacket for £150. If it’s a waterproof jacket you are after, look no further than Fjern’s Orkan Waterproof Shell Jacket with eVent fabric technology and a waterproof rating of 20,000mm.

Finally, you’ll need proper trousers!

Now we have conquered your top layers, next we want to focus on the bottom half. For those Winter conditions you want to ensure your trousers are not only water-repellent but also windproof with some give, so you are still able to move freely. Trousers made with softshell fabrics with DWR have our vote, that’s why we feel the Vinter Trousers (£120) do an excellent job of achieving the above whilst offering multiple compartments to store your small essentials.

Now you have the basics together, you should be ready to head out on your hike. Finding the right kit for you can take time, but planning is key. Ensuring you have the correct kit to remain safe and dry is the best start you can give yourself to enjoy your time outdoors and whatever you do, don’t forget hiking boots!

Lastly, please be aware all the links we have provided to our recommended kit comes in both Mens and Womens variations. If you have any questions, please contact us at info@unboundsupply.co or follow us on Instagram at @unboundsupplyco.
