Softshell Jackets : Buying Guide
Heading into the cooler months, we think it's essential to understand the need and purpose for softshell jackets. They bring warmth to your layering system and, when used correctly, can also aid comfort and your ability to move with purpose.
So What Is A Softshell Jacket?
In simple terms, a softshell jacket is essentially a well ventilated jacket which uses a breathable waterproof membrane. Their main purpose to add a layer of warmth whilst still allowing for airflow to regulate around your body. Typically these jackets are NOT waterproof but are treated with a water repellent, such as DWR fabrics (Durable Water Repellent). Therefore if you're heading out into more harsh conditions with snow, heavy rain or sleet, you may wish to consider adding a waterproof jacket on top of your softshell.
When Do You Wear A Softshell Jacket?
Softshell jackets have a variety of uses and are very handy technical mid layers. When you are being active, they are much more practical then their heavier counterparts, which can't provide you with the mobility you need. Some examples of their uses can be:
Cycling/ climbing/ trail running: wear over a base layer to give you that extra level of warmth, whilst not being restrained by a heavier duty jacket
Everyday walking: in moderate conditions a softshell may be all you require when venturing out.
Softshell jackets can be a great pack-and-go layer, so depending on your weather conditions, the jacket itself can be all you need or just chuck on a waterproof in order to get that extra level of protection.
